History
Joseph Mulloy and his wife, Karen, corresponded with Merton for a number of years. In 1968, it was arranged through a mutual friend for Joseph to meet Merton at Gethsemani. Merton supported Mulloy in seeking Conscientious Objector status for the Vietnam War and wrote a letter to Local Board 47 in Louisville, Kentucky. Despite this, Mulloy was sent to prison.
