These letters, mostly originals from Burden to Merton, primarily concern the publication of Burden's books of photographs of Gethsemani, entitled «God Is My Life» (‹http://bellarmine.on.worldcat.org/search?databaseList=638&queryString=ti:God+Is+My+Life›). However, they also discuss the Shakers, and Burden may have helped Merton come into contact with Edward Deming Andrews. Merton sends Burden photographs of his drawings in hopes of having them displayed in Santa Barbara with proceeds going to a Negro scholarship and a scholarship at Bellarmine College in Louisville.

This file contains a letters to and from Merton, and a letter sent to Bishop Thomas J. Drury of San Angelo, Texas. They concern the establishment of retreat center for priest around San Angelo and with the help of Fr. Bernard Sylvanus de Aguira, O.C.S.O. They also proposed that Merton be the leader of this group of priest living a contemplative and eremitical life temporarily and while on retreat. Merton responds that he is interested in helping struggling priest and likes the retreat idea, but states that he would not be allowed to leave Gethsemani for such an endeavor. He also thinks the idea of trying to make it true contemplative life is too ambitious and confuses the end results. He suggests focusing on retreats for priests.

Sr. Bridget is asking whether Merton can attend a meeting with Sybil Harton. At that meeting they discussed problems in determining who has a vocation, active versus contemplative leanings in the order, and an "identity crisis" that exists in many orders.
