This was not published during Merton's life as a book in English, only in French and Portuguese. It was expanded from a three-installment article published in «Collectanea Ordinis Cistciensium Reformatorum» in 1953 (with an additional offprint). A French edition was published in book form in 1956, «Marthe, Marie et Lazare». The English text became the first section of «Thomas Merton on St. Bernard» (Cistercian Publications: Kalamazoo, Michigan) in 1980. See Section C.2, "Martha, Mary and Lazarus" for first drafts of some of the articles.
This was not published during Merton's life as a book in English, only in French and Portuguese. First lines: "I - Action and Contemplation. Before we approach the subject of this book, which is St Bernard's.." Contents: Copied from Sub-Section D.5. Contains five sections..
First lines: "There is one exception to St Bernard's rule that every perfect soul combines in itself the vocation.." Contents: Not one of the three original articles from Collectanea, it was added as the final chapter of the book-length text of "Action and Contemplation" (pp. 79-88 in «Thomas Merton on Saint Bernard» and pp. 127-145 in «Marthe, Marie et Lazare»)..
Text is similar to a part of Merton's epilogue of «The Seven Storey Mountain», "Meditatio Pauperis in Solitudine," part iii (after break) or part iv, depending on edition. Follows heading: "America is discovering the contemplative life." See also, Section A, Correspondence, "Censors Reports."
First lines: "There are paradoxes in the history of Christian spirituality and not the least of them is.." Contents: Notes (copied not original notes) in an unknown hand, not Merton's, offering criticism of article, but some cut off bottom of page. Notes seem to have been written in fountain pen..
