Published Essay

This was not published during Merton's life as a book in English, only in French and Portuguese. It was expanded from a three-installment article published in «Collectanea Ordinis Cistciensium Reformatorum» in 1953 (with an additional offprint). A French edition was published in book form in 1956, «Marthe, Marie et Lazare». The English text became the first section of «Thomas Merton on St. Bernard» (Cistercian Publications: Kalamazoo, Michigan) in 1980. A French edition was published in book form in 1956, «Marthe, Marie et Lazare». The English text became the first section of «Thomas Merton on St. Bernard» (Cistercian Publications: Kalamazoo, Michigan) in 1980. This Records Sub-Group originally included periodicals used by Merton. It was expanded to include extra copies of periodicals sent to Merton with his published articles sorted by journal title (copies of the article are first kept with Records Sub-Group 4i [D.1] by article title). Periodicals containing articles about Merton through the present have been integrated into Records Sub-Group 4i [D.1].

Handwritten notes by Merton regarding his schedule during his stay at Eagle River, Alaska; and plans for travel to Cordova, Alaska; San Francisco, California; and Santa Barbara, California. Originally in a book used by Merton with marginal notes: «L'Evangile au desert: des premiers moines a Saint Bernard», edited by Placide Deseille.
