Paul-Pierre Cardinal Philippe was a Dominican priest who initially taught at the Pontificium Athenaeum Angelicum in Rome. In 1959, he became secretary of the Vatican's Congregation for Religious. In 1967, he became secretary of Doctrine of the Faith for the Roman Curia, and was elevated to cardinal in 1973. Philippe had been to Gethsemani and spoke to the community.

Gabriel Vahanian was one of the foremost theologians of the Death of God Movement that flourished in the 1960's. Later, he would write about technology and its effects on society and theology, including reflections on the thoughts of Jacques Ellul. Gabriel Vahanian writes to Merton while at his summer residence in Allauch, France. At that time, he was a professor at Syracuse University in New York.

Dom Alferio Caruana was a Maltese Benedictine monk living in Salerno, Italy, and trying to go to Malta. "Dom" is used here as a title of a professed monk and does not mean he was an abbot. Caruana's letter mentions he will be ordained to the priesthood in July of 1967.

Humorist, editor and publisher, Bennett Cerf was Chairman of the Board and founder of Random House publishing house in New York. Prior to founding Random House, he had co-purchased the Modern Library series. He was a fellow graduate and editor of «Jester» at Columbia University, but many years prior to Merton's arrival. He later guest starred as a panelist on the TV show "What's My Line?". Sr. Clare Immaculate was writing from the Sisters of Saint Francis in Philadelphia.

Merton writes to Mother Mary Francis Clare, who is in New Orleans. She had attended a meeting at Gethsemani Abbey in December of 1967 of Merton speaking with contemplative nuns.

The letterhead of his letter states that Fr. Clark was of the "Jesuit Mission Band" from St. Louis, Missouri. His ministry was working with those in prison on death row.

Fr. Claude J. Peifer was a Benedictine monk from St. Bede Abbey in Peru, Illinois. He later served as abbot there from 2003-2011.

Dick Coanda was active in the Cursillo Movement in the Catholic Church and served as editor of a small Cursillo newsletter called «Ultreya».

Alan C. Collins was President of the publishing company Curtis Brown, Ltd., and writes from New York.

Tom Cornell was active in the Catholic Worker Movement since Merton's contact with him in the 1960's and for many years lived on a Catholic Worker farm. He was a founding member of the Catholic Peace Fellowship (CPF). He was a friend and associate of Dorothy Day and Jim Forest.

Fr. John Correia-Afonso was a Jesuit writing to Merton from St. Xavier College in Bombay.

Pablo Antonio Cuadra was a Nicaraguan poet and author of over twenty books. He was editor of the literary reviews «Vanguardia» and «El Pez y La Serpiente», and co-edited the newspaper «La Prensa» with Pedro Joaquin Chamorro. Dame Hildelith Cumming (born Barbara Theresa Cumming) was publisher and head printer at Stanbrook Abbey Press of the Benedictine nuns of Stanbrook Abbey in Callow End, Worcester, England. She was a convert to Catholicism. Besides her great success in raising the prestige of the press in her long tenure from 1956-1991, she was known as a fine musician and had published liturgical music.

Joseph E. Cunneen was Director of the Religious Department of Holt, Rinehart and Winston Publishers at the time of correspondence with Merton. He and his wife, Sally Cunneen, were the founding editors of the quarterly review, «Cross Currents», which published a number of Merton's essays. He writes from New York.

John Cushman was with the Translation Rights Department with Curtis Brown.

Br. Damian was a Passionist religious and editor of «Brothers' Newsletter», a quarterly publication for religious brothers of various congregations.

Guy Davenport was a professor of literature at University of Kentucky and author of literary essays, short stories and poetry. He visited Merton's hermitage in 1967 (source: «The Courage for Truth», p. 251).

Dr. Louis de Crenascol was director of the Art Department at Seton Hall University in New Jersey.

Dominique de Menil (wife of John de Menil [Jean Marie Joseph Menu de Menil]) writes from Houston, Texas. A prominent oil family, the de Menils collected one of the largest and most important American collections of art. They also devoted much of their later lives to ecumenism. The Menil Collection and the Rothko Chapel are testaments to their legacy in the arts and in ecumenism.

According to a note to handwritten on one of the letters, Randy de Trinis, known at Gethsemani as Sebastian, entered Gethsemani in 1955, made simple profession in 1957, and left the monastery on June 9, 1959. He later writes from St. Joseph's Priory in Somerset, Ohio. In his last cards, he speaks of a desire to enter Christ in the Desert, a Benedictine monastery in New Mexico.

Abbot Francis De Croix was at the Cistercian Abbey in Frattocchie, Italy, of the Madonna del SS. Sacramento.

Fr. Basil DePinto was a Benedictine priest at Mount Saviour Monastery in Pine City, New York, and took over as editor of «Monastic Studies» from Brendan Collins. DePinto was a former monk of Gethsemani. He later left the Benedictines but remained a priest, serving in Rhode Island and California.

One of the most prominent woman poets of the Beat movement early in her life as poet, Di Prima later co-founded the literary magazine «The Floating Bear» with Imamu Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones), which was published throughout the sixties and is "the bear" to which Merton refers in his letter.

Fr. Michael Dickey was writing from St. Anselm's Priory in Washington, D.C., on behalf of «The American Benedictine Review».

Fr. Leo Diekmann was a Benedictine priest and editor of «Worship», "A review devoted to the Liturgical Apostolate", published at the Liturgical Press of St. John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota. Besides the subject of liturgical renewal, he wrote to Merton concerning the ecumenical movement and changes to the monastic life after the Second Vatican Council. He was also involved in civil rights marches in the 1960's and had later supported the full ministry of women in the Catholic Church.

Christopher Dixon was editor of «The Oakhamian» in 1954, a magazine about Oakham School in England, where Merton had completed his pre-collegiate education. Merton was editor of the same publication in 1931.

Catherine de Hueck Doherty, also referred to as "The Baroness" because of her marriage to Russian noble Baron Boris de Hueck, fled after the Soviet revolution into Canada. Having lost everything, she went from financial struggle and a failed marriage to rebuilding her fortunes by the end of the 1920's. However, wealth did not bring her fulfillment and she decided to give away her money and work among the poor in 1930. She established the first Friendship House in Toronto and later in the 1930's created one in New York's Harlem. After marrying Eddie Doherty in 1943, they founded Madonna House in rural Ontario, a place of retreat and lay apostolate training. Merton heard her speak at St. Bonaventure College while teaching there and felt inspired to come to Harlem and work among the poor in 1941. By the end of that year, he had decided on a vocation as a Trappist at Gethsemani, but remained in touch with Doherty. There is currently a cause for canonization of Doherty. Mr. Donn (there is no first name mentioned) sent Merton a copy of the quarterly publication «Israel's Anchorage: The Voice of Messianic Judaism».

Foster Hailey was a «New York Times» correspondent who spent much of the 1950's on assignment in the Middle East. It seems the two men were acquainted and corresponded prior to this 1961 letter and had last been in touch in the late 1950's.

Alfred Starr Hamilton was a poet and contributor to «Monks Pond». In his biographical statement from «Monks Pond», he states that he had lived through the depression and spent a year in the army; since then, he became a socialist and lived on very little money as a poet.

Fr. Hamman was a Franciscan writing from Notre Dame des Buis in Besançon, France.

Veronica (Moni) Hammer was a daughter of Victor Hammer and writes from Vienna, Austria.

Monsignor James J. Hammon was Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Natchez, Mississippi.

Charles Hansel was Director of Religious Life at Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky.

Sibyl Harton was an Anglican and an author writing from England. She had visited Gethsemani and met Merton in October of 1964.

Freida "Nanny" Hauck was the mother of Elsie Hauck Holahan (later Jenkins). Elsie had moved in to the home of Merton's maternal grandparents, Samuel and "Mattie" Baldwin Jenkins, to take care of Tom and his younger brother John Paul Merton after the death of their mother Ruth Jenkins in 1921. (Elsie later married Merton's uncle, Harold Jenkins). Freida Hauck lived in Great Neck, New York.

Rosemary Haughton was a Catholic theologian and author. She was born in England, but lived in many places in Europe, and once in the United States, while young and now resides in the United States. She wrote books regarding Catholic culture, feminist spirituality, marriage and sexuality, and books for children.

The following year after writing to Merton, Terence Heelas began writing for «The Strategic Commentary». In this weekly periodical, he advocated that the United States could not win the Vietnam War; therefore, by simple military logic, should leave Vietnam. Heelas seems to have written Merton with some of his earlier ideas on strategic planning on November 27, 1964 (letter is not extant). Merton gives his opinion on such strategic arguments.

Fr. Elmer J. Henderson was a Jesuit priest and Managing Editor of the quarterly review «Thought».

Ammon Hennacy writes as the Director of the Joseph Hill House of Hospitality and St. Joseph's Refuge. The house fed the hungry and commemorated Joe Hill, who was a labor leader accused of murder (some say framed) and executed by the state of Utah in 1915. Hennacy was a pacifist and advocate for prisoners on death row. He converted to Catholicism in 1952 and shortly after served as an associate editor in New York for the «Catholic Worker» until moving to Salt Lake City and founding Joseph Hill House in 1961. Dagmar Henne was with the German Department of the publisher Agence Hoffman and writes from Munich, Germany.

Fr. Theodore M. Hesburgh was a priest of the Congregation of the Holy Cross and served as president of Notre Dame University from 1952-1987. He served on the United States Commission on Civil Rights from 1957 to 1972 and later chaired the commission. He was also active in opposition to the Vietnam War and support of the rights of immigrants to this country. Merton's letter is not extant, but he seems to write in relation to atomic weapons and Hesburgh's position as Vatican representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, a duty performed from 1956-1970.

Geof Hewitt is a poet who, at the time of correspondence with Merton, was 24 and living in Iowa. Having begun writing as a teen, he had by 1968 founded a small specialty press, Kumquat Press. Merton publishes some of Hewitt's poems in the first issue of «Monks Pond». Hewitt would publish another of «Monks Pond»'s poets, Alfred Starr Hamilton. H. A. M. van der Heyden writes from Utrecht, the Netherlands on behalf of the publisher Uitgeverij Het Spectrum.

Gertrude Hindemith was the wife of Paul Hindemith (1895-1963), a modern violinist and composer. They were born and married in Germany but left after the Nazis rose to power. After spending a brief period in Switzerland, Paul took a job as professor at Yale from 1940 to 1953. In 1953, they moved to Zürich, Switzerland, where this correspondence begins (it seems they had corresponded before this time). Some letters are co-signed by Paul Hindemith.

Glenn Hinson was a retired Baptist professor who was teaching church history at Southern Seminary in Louisville at the time of writing to Merton. In the early 1960's, he brought groups of Baptist students to visit Merton at Gethsemani. Later, Dom James Fox asked that Merton stop meeting with such groups because he would require more solitude to fully live the eremitical life. Later in life, he was a visiting professor at Baptist Seminary of Kentucky in Lexington, Lexington Theological Seminary, Bellarmine University, and Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.

Merton writes to James Hoban in response to a question about the Catholic Church's position regarding modern war.

Jim Holloway came to Berea College in 1965 where he would remain as a professor before retiring in 1992. He was co-founder with Will Campbell of «Katallagete» (Greek for "be reconciled!"), a magazine sponsored by the Committee of Southern Churchmen (CSC) and to which Merton contributed. Holloway served as editor.

Edwin Honig writes as a professor in the Department of English at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Br. Hugh was a Trappist from Gethsemani writing about a minor issue of sorting mail with Merton while he was visiting the Trappistine nuns at Redwoods Monastery in California.

H. Stuart Hughes was a scholar of the intellectual history of Europe, author, and professor at Harvard University at the time of writing to Merton. His first letter to Merton is written shortly after a failed bid for United States Senator of Massachusetts on an Independent ticket, losing to Ted Kennedy in 1962. Previously, Merton had been contacted by the group Artists and Writers for Hughes, to whom he sent a reply with some contributions of his writing. Hughes was involved in the Massachusetts Political Action for Peace, which awarded Merton their Pax Peace Prize in 1963. His 1967 telegram is written while Chair of the SANE, "A Citizens’ Organization for a Sane World", which called for worldwide nuclear disarmament. (Sources: "H.
