Reading Notebooks (Working Notes)

This Records Sub-Group contains handwritten notes on books being read by Merton contained primarily in spiral notebooks or in bound paper books. Most notes are unpublished and many are in incomplete sentences or contain direct quotes from something read. Occasionally, Merton wrote a poem in the pages of the notebook. A minority of the notebooks have been transcribed, but all have an index, but not a comprehensive one.

The notebooks are roughly arranged chronologically. Refer to the notebooks index for topics, authors, and titles of works noted upon.
